The Village of Mamaroneck’s newest Assistant Village Manager, Dennis Delborgo, is happy to be back in the Mamaroneck area. He grew up in the Town, went through the Mamaroneck school system and lived locally until 2014 when his growing family needed more space prompting a move upcounty.
Delborgo comes to us after 20 years with Westchester County’s Office of Emergency Management. Looking for a new challenge, he saw the Assistant Manager job posting and decided to apply. His first interest has always been local government, stating “that’s where things get done.” After getting his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from John Jay College, his first job was with the Village of Pelham – working with Rich Slingerland, a former Mamaroneck Village Manager. Currently, Delborgo is pursuing a master’s degree in public administration.
Having just started on February 14th, Delborgo is still in what he calls his “learning period.” He is meeting with Village staff and even attended a meeting of the Budget Committee. Delborgo said he was impressed by “the skill set and depth of experience” he has seen – both in paid staff and volunteers. He hopes he can work with the community to develop solutions to the issues we face.
Delborgo realizes the challenges but said he was excited to be here to work with Village Manager Kathleen Gill to open up communication and collaboration to make meaningful progress. One of his first priorities is to get a sense of the scope of the flooding issue and he is looking forward to meeting with community members. Delborgo was a flood victim in 2007 when he lived in a small basement apartment in the Town. He lost everything and had to move but said several times that he “couldn’t imagine what it is like to be a multiple times flood victim” referring to not just the actual flooding but the aftermath of dealing with insurance, FEMA and rebuilding.
Recognizing the long history of flooding here, Delborgo is also diving into learning about it and the studies that have been done to date in addition to the oral history.
Besides being the point person on flooding, Delborgo has other responsibilities including infrastructure, transportation and pedestrian safety, as well as operations.
Delborgo is also a 25 year volunteer firefighter. Starting with the Town of Mamaroneck, he joined the Goldens Bridge department when he moved. He served as Chief of that department from 2022-23 and still answers calls. Over the years, he has met several Village volunteers and stated that one of his goals here is “to figure out which Casterella brother is which” (they are identical triplets).
