Trustee Ticketed Near School

by Cindy Goldstein -

Tuesday, April 16, 2024 was a normal school day at the Mamaroneck Avenue School where classes started at 8:40 am.  Prior to that time each day, traffic starts to build in the area and results in congestion and gridlock.

According to the ticket issued by a Mamaroneck Village police officer, Trustee Leilani Yizar-Reid was driving southbound on Mamaroneck Avenue.  (See ticket HERE.)  Along the 800 block of Mamaroneck Avenue Yizar-Reid was observed using a “portable electronic device.”  She then crossed the solid double yellow line travelling approximately four car lengths in the northbound lane before making a lefthand turn onto Sheldrake Place.  The violation was written up that she “Disobeyed a Traffic Control Device” based on direct observation by the police officer.  No charge for driving with the portable electronic device was made.

The horrific traffic accident that claimed the lives of two pedestrians, a mother and her 6 year-old son happened just two months later on June 20th approximately a block and a half away.

Yizar-Reid, a trustee on the Village of Mamaroneck Board of Trustees (BOT), was elected in November 2022 and is completing her first two-year term in office.  She is also the liaison to the Traffic Commission.  She is not seeking re-election in November.   The disposition of the ticket is not known at the time of publication.  The Observer is continuing its inquiry.

Editor’s Note: The Mamaroneck Observer learned of this incident on June 28th when we obtained a copy of the ticket from a verified source.
