John J. O’Keeffe Jr., - former airline executive and Larchmont attorney died peacefully at home surrounded by loved ones November 29 after a long battle with cancer. He was 82.
Known to all simply as “Jack,” Mr. O’Keeffe was born December 21, 1941, to John and Mary O’Keeffe, Irish-born immigrants who settled in Ridgefield, CT. The elder Mr. O’Keeffe helped manage two of the imposing estates that characterized Ridgefield in the 1920s and 1930s and was a recognized authority on horticulture.
Son Jack’s easy manner and quick humor made him popular in school and beyond. He graduated in 1960 from Ridgefield High School, lettering in sports and a scholarship winner. He earned a bachelor’s degree at Fairfield (CT) University in 1965 and a degree from George Washington University Law School in 1968.
He entered the airline industry as a corporate attorney for Pan American World Airways, moved to Trans World Airlines in 1972 and rose to Senior Vice President, Secretary and General Counsel for TW Services in 1986. His career took him to destinations all over the world.
Mr. O’Keeffe became involved fending off Wall Street’s infamous corporate “raiders” in the 1980s, eventually leaving corporate life in 1990.
He then took on the unusual job of selling off thousands of acres of prime forest land in northern New Jersey and New York for a family that had owned them more than 200 years.
The family had been granted a patent by Thomas Jefferson in the 1700s to make iron nails and operated a factory on the Ramapo River in Rockland County, NY. The forest fueled their furnaces.
As president and CEO of the privately-held Ramapo Land Co., Mr. O’Keeffe ultimately disposed of more than 3,000 acres of land and other properties. It was supposed to be a one year-job, one of his associates recalled. It took 20.
Mr. O’Keeffe refused to make easy deals with developers, holding out for the best public impact of each sale.
Some took years of public battles with local and state regulators and noisy demonstrations by private citizens. He sold 1,200 acres to New Jersey for parkland. He arranged a deal that protected views of a scenic mountain. He sold off an 1800s-era water company that still had original wooden pipes. Overall, he finished a job that the family had started 100 years earlier.
(Fighting for noble causes was a familiar notion in the O’Keeffe household. Jack’s wife and law-school sweetheart, the former Valerie Moore, is the daughter of one of Thomas E, Dewey’s fabled mob-busting attorneys.)
Jack was a popular raconteur with his friends, telling stories about memorable childhood characters, sometimes improving them as time went on.
He was a dedicated golfer and fisherman, an avid naturalist, member of the Audubon Society and interested in ornithology. A formidable political science scholar, he loved arguing constitutional law, history and politics. His grandchildren knew him best as a Giants football fan.
In addition to his wife Valerie, Mr. O’Keeffe is survived by a daughter Anna G. O’Keeffe in Colorado, her four children and one new-born great-grandson who has been named after Mr. O’Keeffe. Also, a son, John M. (Christina) O’Keeffe in Connecticut and their two children; and two sisters and a brother, Mary Ellen Riddell in Massachusetts, Elizabeth Hurley in Rhode Island, and Thomas J. O’Keeffe in Ridgefield.
