Nicolas Barreto of Mamaroneck passed away March 5, 2024. Nicolas was born in Pinar del Rio, Cuba on September 10, 1938 to Jesus and Maria Barreto. He emigrated to the U.S on July 2, 1969 with his wife and son. Nicolas worked as a painter for Derecktor’s shipyards until 2020. He was their first employee to reach 50 years of service. Nicolas was a sportsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing with his son and grandsons. He also loved spending time with his family at Sunday dinners. He was also so proud of his granddaughter Bryana for attending medical school and on her way to becoming a doctor. Nicolas would give you the shirt off his back without hesitation, he would help anyone who needed it. We will dearly miss the laughs, smiles and happiness he brought to so many. Nicolas leaves behind his wife Manuela of 65 years. His son Jose (Marlo), grandchildren Nicolas (Veronika), Bryana and Jesse. As well as his brothers, sisters, many nieces, nephews, and friends will miss him greatly. Nicolas is now reunited with his parents.
Nancy Walters, of Mamaroneck, passed away at home on March 4, 2024, at age 85. She was born on May 1, 1938, to Thomas & Laura Grannells. Nancy was the first female to graduate from SUNY Farmingdale School of Electrical Engineering. She utilized her talents in an early career with IBM as a computer logic designer; at one time she held a security clearance to work on a project for the US Air Force. She would interrupt her career to fulfill her most rewarding role as a wife and mother and, years later, would spend 21 years with BOCES as a special education teacher of autistic children. Nancy was gifted with a beautiful singing voice and sang with many church choirs over the years, as well as Capella Festiva, a semi-professional choral group in the Mid-Hudson Valley. She is the devoted wife of Kevin Walters, the cherished mother of Wendy Wiley, Vicki Kane (Brian), Amy Witney (Douglas) and Emily Kaplan (Peter), and loving grandmother of Mallorie, Ian, Sarah, Vincent, and Ana. Nancy is also the sister of Richard Grannells (Cynthia). Memorial contributions may be sent to The Alzheimer’s Association.
