Zoning Change to Limit Density in Washingtonville

Village Manager Kathleen Gill introduced a measure to “downzone” Washingtonville.  The move would change the current R4F zoning to R2F and limit future density in the flood-prone area to 1-2 family homes.  (Current zoning allows for up to 4 family homes).  The Village will undertake an internal analysis of the proposal and Gill explained that all existing properties with more than 2 units will be grandfathered.  The Board of Trustees voted to schedule the public hearing at the February 10th meeting.  The proposal was met with applause from the Washingtonville residents in attendance.

Gill also suggested the Board of Trustees (BOT) adopt a local law to automatically impose a 90 day moratorium when contemplating any zoning changes to the Code.  The automatic moratorium would be effective when the public hearing is scheduled to discuss the potential amendment to the law.  This proposal was also met with enthusiasm by the audience members.

New Assistant Village Manager Dennis Delborgo

Gill also introduced the new Assistant Village Manager for Flood and Transportation at the meeting.  Delborgo will start on February 14th and has spent the last 19 years as the Office of Emergency Management Director for Westchester County.  Delborgo grew up in Larchmont/Mamaroneck and graduated from Mamaroneck High School.

Unpaid Real Estate Taxes

Acting Clerk Sally Roberts reported that any unpaid Village real estate taxes will be sold on March 12.  (The Village “sells” the right to collect any unpaid taxes).  If you have outstanding Village taxes you may end up owing the money to a third party – whomever purchases the right from the Village.

Property owners are advised to confirm their payments were received by the Village.  Check your bank account to see the check cleared.  Generally, this will only apply to property owners who do not have a mortgage or do not have their real estate taxes paid to the bank monthly in escrow.  Recent issues with the Post Office have contributed to the problem of checks not being received.

There’s still time to pay any balance due before the sale although there will be associated penalties.  Contact the Clerk-Treasurer’s office at 914-777-7722 for more information.
